DPS

To start with I took photos of denim items including jackets and jeans and selected the ones I felt had the best quality and contrast.

I added the photos into photoshop and used adjusted the levels and saturation of the all. I edited them to be black and white apart from one image which I could later use to eye drop the colour from. Using the guid lines I ordered the photos to fit into a rectangle shape. I attempted to have the same width gutter between each photo.

I added the article headline using the font 'Riot' which is distressed contrasting with the crisp and sharp photos. I used the coloured photograph to eye drop for the colour of the text. I then inserted two oblong shapes, again colouring them through the eye drop tool. This created a centre figure to use for alignment of text, when added later in the process.

Using Lorem Ipsum I created the article text. For the left column I wrapped it around title of the article. The other column on the left page has white text and a black background, aligned with the orange rectangle. For the right page, I aligned three columns with the grid and pictures. These columns were also aligned horizontally; same amount lines.

I added a quote by Georgio Armani using a script font. This contrasts with the sans serif font used for the columns, also the distressed font of the article title. For the quotation marks I made them large and coloured them the same as the repeated title 'Daring Denim'. I then added the page numbers using the same script font as the quotation and a circle background coloured using the eye drop tool selecting the colour of the rectangles.

For the final touches of the double page spread I added the running head including the name of the magazine and article writer.

Finally, I completed the double page spread with the last edits. I changed the left column so that there is white space on the top of it as I felt it looked too cramped with the column being the full length of the page. It also links with the white space on the bottom right of the left page. I made the page numbers smaller as they were too large, and I slimmed the orange rectangles so that they left a larger gap between it and the left column. Also it creates a larger contrast between the orange rectangle and black box of text.

Photo Editing

This is the original photograph, which is quite low in saturation/vibrance and is cool considering the colour balance.
I changed the levels of the image to make the darks closer to the black and the lights closer to bright white. This brightens the picture as it has a larger contrast considering lights and darks.

I then adjusted the colour balance to warm up the photo. I made it less blue/green and more towards the red part of the spectrum.

Lastly, I changed the vibrance. This saturated the colours further, to brighten and bring more vibrant colour to the photo. I didn't adjust this too much as I still wanted the photo to look natural.

I made a new layer in which I deleted half of the edited layers. This enabled me to show the difference between the original and edited image.

Front Cover

Firstly, I placed my chosen photo for the magazine into photoshop and I edited the levels; light, dark and medium tones.

I then edited the hue saturation and lightness (Command U)

I then place in a drawn copy of the picture. I did this using the light box to get the correct proportions and placements of the outlines. I used black fine liner so that I could then put this into threshold (only black and white)

I then deleted the white, selecting it using the magic wand tool, and placed this layer on top of the actual picture. This meant the picture would show through where the white originally was on the threshold version of the drawing.

I then added the mast head. I wanted it to be sans serif and bold, but have an original element; the curving of the cut offs point. I also picked the colour from the image of the building. This colour is a less saturated light orange/red, which contrasts well with the blue sky.

At this point I added a sticker. I chose to use a bright yellow to contrast with the subtle colours of the image and mast head.

I then added the institutional information; issue number, date, price and barcode.

At this point I started to add in the cover lines. I placed a brush effect background to the cover line; an idea and feature I was inspired by when making my front cover copy. I also added 'Dubai Edition' to the bottom of the page. The two fonts were of a similar category but different enough so that they are concordant. Also they contrast with the plain sans serif used for the institutional information.

I then added further cover lines using the contrast of brush strokes and aligned rectangles. Also the contrasting fonts.

At this point I added in the rest of the cover lines. The main one being 'Fancy a safari in the Sahara'. This is larger to create contrast in size and emphasize the hierarchy.

I then viewed this piece and critically analysed it. This then gave me the ideas on how to improve it.

I changed the colour of the sticker as I feel it was at the top of the hierarchy, and I didn't want it to be. I toned the colour down and made it fit to the colour scheme by colour picking the background of the sticker from the photo.

I then changed the fonts so that there were only two contrasting fonts. I feel the ones I originally used made the front cover look too busy, due to too many script/handwritten fonts. These fonts are contrasting as one id bold and sans serif and the other is thinner and serif.

I wanted the mast head to be higher in the order of hierarchy. To do this I needed it to stand out more. I added a white outline to highlight the text and I added an inner shadow to allow the text to appear 3D.

This completed my front cover magazine. Below is my finished piece.

Spray Paint Magazine

I chose this photo because it is quite simple and all of the model's features are distinctive.

I made this photo black and white, and them selected an option to put the photo into 4 colours; no fill, light grey, dark grey and black.

I then printed out 3 pictures
1. The light grey, dark grey and black
2. The dark grey and black
3. Just the black

I cut out the coloured parts of the 3 pictures using a knife and cutting board. I placed a white piece of paper behind each stencil and stuck them together using masking tape. I then sprayed each stencil using black spray paint.

I took each stencil off of the three pieces of paper, scanned them in and edited them to be threshold (black and white only).

I then changed the colour of the originally 'all 3 colours'.

This is the colour scheme I wanted to follow, influenced by the artist Miles Donovan.

I applied this colour scheme using the colour picker tool.

To add the 'magnificent' heading, I made my own stencil using a craft knife, and then sprayed this and scanned it in. I the overlapped two of the heading with different colours to add more detail.

I then added the coloured background for the cover lines using the paint tool at a large size and sometimes incorporating the elliptical and rectangular marquee tools to create a crisp edge the the cover line background.

Then I added the cover lines using contrasting fonts (sans serif/chalk handwritten/ italic calligraphy).

This is my finished spray paint magazine. I enlarged certain headlines to add a hierarchy.
