No Staples Book

Firstly, I drew out some basic stationary using a fine liner pen. This is handy in further stages of the process.

I then separated each drawing onto it's own layer and adjusted them to threshold to make it easier when producing the layout and editing the colours.

I used the brush tool when colouring the drawings and coloured 'out of the lines'. It gives a link to younger children when using stationary (the subject matter) colouring in a colouring book and it not being 'perfect'. I think this makes the design more enjoyable as it looks good but isn't perfect. I used red as my main colour, using different shades and I also used different shades of black contrasting with the strong saturated red colours.

I did this to all of the drawings on their separate layer so that I could transfer them to the no staples template.

I used ink and a paintbrush to create words associated with stationary to edit into my design. I made the page threshold (pure black and white) so it was in the same clear colour scheme as the drawings, and I could easily place it into the design without having to edit the colour the any further.

I then placed each edited drawing and inked writing into the template for the content of the no staples book. I changed the sizes and angles so that it all fit together with an equal spread of white space.

For the poster on the opposite side of the no staples book I wanted to include an orderly design. I placed the first image in (compass) and placed the point of the compass in the centre of the template. Then I duplicated it, placing the duplicated one onto of the originally placed compass. The I rotated it but moved it's centre point of the rotation to the centre on the template. I repeated this until I had made a complete circle of equally spaced compass images. To complete this design I repeated the same process with each edited stationary image.

I was pleased with my front page, I named the book 'Stationary But Not Still' which I feel is an ironic name as it includes a link to two meanings of stationary.

The inside of the book is very equally balanced as the white space is spread throughout the design. I like how the images aren't all completely on the page and go over the edge onto another page. Also none of the images overlap and have white space surrounding them.

I am also very pleased with how the poster page turned out. I feel it looks very ordered and creates a kaleidoscope effect with the repetition of each edited stationary image.
